Ok, so this is just going to be one of those articles that is not very structured or informed; for that matter it will also be opinionated. Although it is for the movie of the month column, it will focus on other things (at least that part is common by this point).
First of all, the movie: The Adam Project. A fine action flick except for some plot holes, but those are quite likely when you are dealing with time travel. The way they make it work is by simply stating that the timeline corrects itself, so no paradoxes, and I am going to give them that at least. Staring Ryan Reynolds and Zoe Saldana, the movie has decent action scenes and quite a few good jabs and quips, but that is to be expected from the actor that portrayed the ‘merc with a mouth’.
So, why is this article not as much as about the movie itself? Well, in this particular case I wanted to think about the leading protagonist and other of his similar roles. First and foremost he did a good job portraying Deadpool; cancel that last thought, the man was meant to BE Deadpool. Just from his interviews (I don’t know if it is just a persona he created or if he actually is like that), Ryan Reynolds has these constant moments of wisecracks and jokes, something that is in sync with his characters on the big screen. I don’t want to dive into a consideration on all of his other movies, but from time to time it seems he portrays a specific type of character, especially considering the movies where he is also the producer. Don’t get me wrong, Free Guy is an acceptable work, many of the quips are fun the meme referencing is ok, but there are just some things that seem forced. I get the fact that he is the main character and has pretty much everything going for him, but at times, for this characteristic the movie seems to lack a moment of growth or that feeling of depth. For now Ryan Reynolds is having fun doing everything that he wants, especially the quote on quote light-sabers not-ligh-sabers from The Adan Project; and sincerely, kudos on that and good for you.
So here’s my thought: Ryan, I like you dearly, I just hope that you don’t become like say Adam Sandler where pretty much every new movie is a repeat of the previous one.
Before I forget, I would give the movie a 6 out of 10 timely plotly wormholes.
