Journey is a 2012 videogame developed by Thatgamecompany that perfectly demonstrates how a game can deliver so much more than what we would normally expect. The story, although simplistic, is not ever narrated, in fact there is no such thing as voice acting; furthermore, although being a two or three hour long gaming experience, one that some might even define a walking simulator, it is masterfully crafted for its length. As a player, you are able to see the passion of the creators and resonate with the game itself on so many different levels.
I will not describe the ‘plot’ for the simple fact that the whole experience is simply ineffable. The only thing I can comment on is how the name of the game encompasses exactly what the game is about. You are a hooded figure who journeys throughout the desert to reach a beam of light on the top of a faraway mountain, and that is pretty much it.
As for gameplay, except for the directional controls, you just have two inputs: a jump button and one that lets you interact with world that surrounds you by whistling. To be frank, you don’t need much more than that.
The two main features of Journey are its setting and its music. You start on a sand dune and traverse through a crumbled world, but the physics at play are thoroughly studied. The main character reacts to the environment: the posture changes based on moment, striding is different from sliding down a hill as it is different from stumbling forward. The fluidity of movement creates a unique experience and when you start picking up the pace and start moving faster, you also feel lighter because of the music that perfectly intertwines with the action. In fact, the immersion that Journey creates is only enhanced by its soundtrack: differentiation from tranquil, blissful and even soft music, picks up in the more fast-paced parts of the game or slows down accordingly.
As a final side note, if Anakin’s words on sand resonate deeply with you, then you might have some problems with this game.
Ultimately, Journey creates its particular brand of flow through a cinematic gaming experience that is only reinforced by its soundtrack. It delivers a unique immersion that merits the praise and acclaim it received.
