So recently I was in Prague for a wonderful conference on comic books and film studies where I had the pleasure to geek out about the liminal encounters between words and pictures; I presented a couple of ideas about Firefly, a wholesome TV series that unfortunately was cancelled (mostly because of corporate interests) but that received several comic book sequels. So, am I writing this article to share my thoughts on the conference and on the city? Well, just partially. Am I writing the article on the other hand because I enjoyed the extremely corny title I gave it? Most definitely.
I already mentioned that I was there for a conference; I had the opportunity to meet some fantastic individuals and discuss about common passions, both academically as well as from a more nerdy perspective. I built new bridges and who knows where those may lead in the near future – hopefully towards yet again new projects (since that seems to be a recurring mantra for me at this point). I don’t want to discuss my presentation on Firefly, at least not here, since I do have an inkling to work on a video for my YouTube channel (sooner or later at least – I don’t know when I’ll get to that).
About my experience with the city I’m afraid I don’t have much to say than the usual things that you will find in guidebooks, travel vlogs and other such media. I enjoyed it. The city was very nice, welcoming and some of the views were damn right stunning. There are quite a lot of museums and activities that one might enjoy as well as the fact that in supermarkets beer is cheaper than sparkling water – so if you are a beer enthusiast, Prague is definitely the city for you. What I will add is that public transportation is very well organized: buying just one ticket and then having the possibility to use either buses, trams or metros, without having turnstiles (and everything is on time), it’s just a gamechanger.
One last thing, during the conference after-party I met a really swell guy from Cordoba who is currently working in Brussels; it was just one of those spontaneous encounters where we started chatting and since the following day none of us had plans we decided to go out for drinks. We pretty much drank the night away, taking in Prague’s nightlife and talking just about everything and nothing in particular at the same time. It gave me yet another confirmation that part of my heart remains anchored in Spain.
Anyway, that’s about all I have considering that this brief article was meant just as a fly by (yes, I used this expression because I’m writing it while on the plane); for sure, check out the Czech experience if you ever get the opportunity to do so.
