Some like it hot is a 1959 comedy directed by Billy Wilder and starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe (and no, it’s not the one with the white dress scene).
Sincerely I do not have much to say about this movie: it’s simply hilarious. The story is about two jazz players who have to escape several mobsters because they have seen a good old fashion hands-against-the-wall lynching; to do so they dress themselves as women and join a female band.
That being said, there are probably some queer (yes, this is for the pun) queries to address; you may imagine that such a movie by the end of the fifties had somewhat of an impact. I would assume that morality was different back then and one might only hope that this movie helped in creating a more inclusive viewpoint. Keep in mind that I am not an expert nor do I have an in-depth analysis on the matter. The only perspective which I can offer is that of a modern viewer: in my opinion the comical value of the scenes still holds perfectly.
One last thing I would note as well regards what could be called the misogyny of older movies. It is something that I was considering as well with the article on The Philadelphia story; in these movies the women end up not with what could be called an ideal man. Pros and cons in this regard: for one thing it is true that life is ever hardly a fairy tale and as such things don’t always go as planned, it is just that in these cases it is the female lead who chooses what might be perceived as the wrong person. In one way the movie seems more authentic than all the movies-made-to-give-a-positive-example; I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that, but the way it is done from time to time nowadays just seems so unreal. There are plenty of ways to empower a female character without having to repeat all the ‘by-now’ canonical tropes.
Since this parenthesis would risk going on for way too long, I prefer putting a halt to my ramblings and repeat that Some like it hot is simply hilarious.
I would give this movie an 8 out of 10 maraschino cherries.
