Gone in 60 Seconds is an action car-heist movie from 2000, directed by Dominic Sena and yet another title that this year hits its 25th anniversary. The premise is basic, a retired car thief has to get back into action and steal fifty high-end cars to protect his younger brother from a big bad villain. It belongs in the ‘sting’ category where a cast of characters prepare for a robbery, plan everything out before all goes to shit and they have to improvise and adapt to the new situation; it has been done extensively by now, but such a trope may still constitute a good watching experience if done properly. It features blonde Nicolas Cage, pre-Tomb Raider Angelina Jolie and a pretty hilarious interpretation by an almost mute Vinnie Jones.
I would call Gone in 60 Seconds the OG Fast and Furious, or at least a source of inspiration for the franchise considering that the first F&F movie came out the very next year. Gone in 60 seconds however at least stuck to stealing cars and didn’t go out of its way to make a franchise where electronic thieves (let’s not forget what they were stealing in Fast and Furious 1) go on to saving the world and driving cars in space. Just saying.
Nick Cage’s over the top interpretation is simply put a pleasure to watch; he will always be one of those actors that put a smile on my face.
I would give this movie a 6 out of 10 Shelby Mustang GT500.
